Kukke Subramanya temple is one of the ancient pilgrimage temple in Dakshina Karnataka. The temple is surrounded by rivers, mountains and waterfalls. On the way to Kukke you can find many waterfalls, it is an eye feasting location.

Sri Adi Shankar Acharya visited Kukke and has named this place as “Bhaje Kukke Lingam” in one of his works “Subramanya Bhujangaprayata Stotram”. The history of Kukke Subramanya temple is explained in detail in the Skanda Purana. Garuda was hunting for snakes in order to fulfil his hunger, Vasuki the king of snakes was hiding himself in Biladwara caves near to temple. Vasuki was a devotee of Lord Shiva. Garuda sighted Vasuki and attached, a Sage Kashyapa Muni interrupted between and ordered Garuda to go Ramanaka islands to hunt for snakes. Kashyapa Muni suggested Vasuki to pray to Lord Shiva for his protection. Lord Shiva appeared in front of Vasuki and told him in the next kalpa his son Subramanya would come and stay there to protect them.

In the next kalpa Lord Subramanya killed the demon Tarakasura, Lord Ganesh and Lord Subramanya arrived at Kumara Parvatha. Lord Indra welcomed them and requested Lord Subramanya to marry his daughter Devasena. The marriage took place in the Kumara Parvatha Mountain on “Margashira Shuddha Shasthi”, the wedding was attended by Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and many others. During the marriage holy water was brought down to the earth in the form of River Kumaradhara. Lord Subramanya promised Vasuki that he will stay in Kukke and protect him.
